Penny swayed her hips slowly, arms in the air. “Ah, what you know about this, baby? They don’t make good music like this anymore.” She began grinding, smiling big. They were jamming to old R&B songs.

Amara giggled and continued washing the dishes.

Good ole’ Sundays.

Sundays had always been there’s no matter what. They used the day to clean the house from top to bottom, do laundry, and then Penny would cook them a fulfilling meal. Afterwards, they would head to the park and go fly kites or stay home to catch up on their TV shows. Today, they opted for the latter.

Amara finished scrubbing the last plate and went to join her mother. They danced in the middle of the kitchen. Laughter escaped both as Penny snapped her fingers and did a two-step. Amara showed her a thing or two and then they softly bumped hips. Throwing their heads back, they cracked up harder at their foolishness.

“Oh, wait a minute, ma. Now that’s my song.” Amara grabbed the remote to the kitchen TV to use as a mic. Luther faded out and “My Girl” by Temptations blared.

Penny closed one of her eyes, cringing at her daughter’s scratchy voice. “Lord, chile. That little raspy voice of yours.”

Amara laughed. “Don’t be hating, ma. I sound good.”

“I bet you believe that.” She shook her head playfully. “Whew, yo’ ass sound awful.” She doubled over from laughing so hard at Amara attempting to hold a note.

“Whatever,”

Penny stood in formation the same way the men did back in the days on the music video. She began performing while singing along to the lyrics. Amara followed suit and they didn’t stop the choreography until the music came to an end. Foreheads drenched in sweat, they finally sat down at the kitchen table to catch their breaths.

Once Penny pulled herself together, she walked over to the cabinet and retrieved her seasonings so that she could start throwing down. Meanwhile, Amara went to grab their laundry baskets so she could wash a load of clothes.

“Remember, separate our white clothes, and make sure you add bleach, girl!” Penny shouted at her.

Still to that day, no matter how much she preached, that darn Amara would try to sneak and wash all of the clothes together.

“I know, ma.”

“Mmhm. When you finish loading the clothes, come on back in here so we can catch up on Power while this meat bake. I need to see my man, Ghost. Not your man, but mine... with his fine ass.”

Amara paused what she was doing and rolled her eyes. The two were always arguing over the character Ghost.

“‘Cause I’m the one who put you on to the show and now you’re trying to claim him. No, ma’am.” Penny continued, waving her large spoon around.

“Oh, ma... please! You stay stealing. I’ve been in love with Omari Hardwick before he even played on Power. You know this.”

“Chile and you can stay in love with him. Omari square behind gets no love from me. It’s Ghost gangsta ass who I’m infatuated with.
